I research and teach about the politics and political economies of Asia at the Australian National University's Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs. I am also a 2025 Westpac Research Fellow. My research is broadly concerned with problems of democratic politics and economic governance, with a particular focus on Indonesia and the Southeast Asian region. I am especially interested in state-business relations and resource politics in young democracies and emerging economies. My research has been published in both area studies and disciplinary journals, including Democratization, Party Politics, Electoral Studies, Third World Quarterly, Extractive Industries and Society, Critical Asian Studies, and Journal of East Asian Studies. I am on editorial boards for the Journal of East Asian Studies, and East Asia Forum and Quarterly Magazine. Beyond academia, I have collaborated with a range of development, transparency, pro-democracy, and resource governance organisations like Transparency International, Greenpeace, Perludem, and The Asia Foundation. And I communicate my research in non-academic outlets such as the Carnegie Endowment, Brookings Institute, Lowy Institute, The Jakarta Post, The Conversation, and ANU's New Mandala.
